Most people wonder how kids end up drowning in pools. Our researched proved that even the most attentive parents can meet with tragedy by taking their eye off their young children for one second. Realistic toy babies were placed face down in water (fountains, public pools, lakes) throughout the city. When people picked them up, they read this message: “If you don’t have a fence around your pool, eventually you won’t need one.” The message also directed them to a web site with some facts about child drowning and information about how to purchase a fence for their pool.

For the beginning of Drowning Impact Awareness Month, we placed a life-sized image of a pool directly on the pavement in front of Bank One Ballpark. On the image of the pool was a baby’s chalk outline with the message: “Without a fence, pools can be deadly. ”Over 100,000 people walked by or on the image of the pool. All of the news stations showed up to report on it.
